Social networking is the currency of communication for youth today. Other than Google search, there is no application on the web that matches public social networking usage. But public social networks are designed to be primarily communication portals designed for low expectation results. Recently I listened to an interview about an author who writes about social networks. He invited his social network "friends" to a night out pub event here in Toronto. He sent the invitation to 70 social networking friends. 30 reported they would come. One showed up. Hence my comment, social networking is communication with low expectation.

But a purposeful use of social networking to inspire young people to learn is a great way to increase the communication outcome of this experience. There are thousands of schools using Ning as a social networking platform. I work with a Toronto developer who has created Recess, a private social network for K-12 schools. There is place for this type of application to foster learning. Why? Because if this is where kids go on the web, second only to Google search, then this is where educators need to embrace the technology and use it to achieve academic goals.

For me taking a cool application like social networking and turning kids on to learning through it is a worthwhile goal. I talk to schools around the world about how to implement a social network into school learning environments to extend the bricks and mortar classroom into the virtual world where kids can collaborate, use blogging to build literacy, use multimedia to help with right-brain development, and experience the excitement of learning using a familiar technology in new ways.

I agree - that's the catch 22.

Wow... that's quite a bit. I guess it makes the point for having private nings, but then that defeats the purpose... catch 22. Thanks.

I'm seconding Sarah McPherson's request. But before banning her here, please also refer its/her/his profile to Ning, so that they can ban it/him/her at all Ning networks.
